Matt Bocchi '10 Shares Powerful Story to Freshman and Sophomores

We are always grateful to have Matt Bocchi ’10 on campus to share his powerful story of resilience through overcoming adversity. Last week, Matt delivered his inspiring message of loss, trauma and addiction to our freshman and sophomores. Matt touched on the importance of our motto HZF and how our students can live by it. Thank you Matt for your vulnerability and honesty!

Matthew Bocchi is a well-known author and speaker who gained recognition for his best-selling memoir, Sway—the first story told by a child of 9/11. In the book, he shares his tumultuous journey of overcoming various struggles, including the loss of his father on 9/11, addiction, and trauma. Matt also talks
about his experiences with mental health challenges, such as depression and PTSD, and his path toward healing and recovery.

Matt’s journey has been featured in numerous documentaries and TV appearances, including Fox News Digital Originals and History’s 9/11: The Legacy. With over nine years of sobriety, Matt now shares his personal story to inspire others to speak up and seek support for their mental health issues, trauma,
and addiction. His advocacy work emphasizes the importance of reducing the stigma of addiction and mental health. Matt’s purpose is to impact at least one life each time he shares history and to be “a voice” for those still suffering.
