Seton Hall Prep is New Jersey’s oldest Catholic college preparatory school. The Prep's tradition is matched by its commitment to the education of young men by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively and become contributing members of society.
At Seton Hall Prep, students participate in many of the amazing offerings available to them outside of the classroom. This includes 15 sports, more than 70 activities and clubs, a variety of intramurals and a seemingly endless number of service projects.
“To equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.”
This June a group of students took part in the inaugural Seton Hall Prep Pilgrimage to Italy. Led by Fr. Bogumil Misiuk '08, SHP Assistant to the President and Chaplain, the students immersed themselves in the Catholic culture of Italy by attending Mass and praying at churches and basilicas, visiting historical Scriptural sites, and indulging in fine Italian cuisine. See below for a reflection by Seton Hall Prep student, Sebastian Nativo '26.
On June 11th I took part in Seton Hall Prep’s Pilgrimage to Italy. It was the best decision I made. I was hesitant in participating since none of my close friends were going. However, I went and I made new friendships. It was the first time I traveled out of the country, and it was a life-changing experience. The trip strengthened my connection to God, deepened my spirituality and enriched my knowledge of the saints.
Our daily visits to various churches and basilicas was truly breathtaking. Visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and being part of the Pope’s general audience was a once in lifetime experience and the highlight of my trip. I was also able to go up the Scala Sancta, originally part of Pontius Pilate’s palace, the stairs that Jesus climbed before his crucifixion, on my knees. Being able to adore Jesus and have that experience helped me truly understand his passion and agony during that time.
This trip gave me a deeper insight to Jesus's journey and my own growing connection to God. I prayed, I served at Mass, I read at Mass and truly took part in the daily services in addition to developing friendships and enjoying the culture. We ate two meals as a group, then explored Rome in smaller groups, trying new delicacies; in my case I tried various pizzas - my go to being bread and nutella - pasta and a lot of gelato to get through the hot days!
As part of the itinerary, one day, we walked over 7 miles to the top of a hill to the Hermitage of St. Francis and were able to see where St. Francis spent most of his time praying. Once we arrived at the top that feeling was surreal.
I am already counting the days to our next pilgrimage. Father Bogumil was certainly an amazing teacher to guide us and educate us through this pilgrimage. I look forward to his guidance on my next pilgrimage!
